This battery is invented by the efforts of researchers from several organizations. They were working with fluoride because they could charge a lot. This battery made by them is the world's first rechargeable fluoride liquid battery that works at room temperature. Science is published in the journal, their research data.
Although working on fluoride in various studies in the past, it did not succeed because of some reasons. Solid fluoride batteries were created in the 1970s, but they needed so much temperature to use that it was inadequate for everyday use devices. Still, research is going on.
A study author, Caltech Professor Robert Grabes (Nobel Prize Chemist in 2005) said fluoride batteries could store up to eight times more energy than the current battery used. But fluoride is a very corrosive and reactionary compound, so it's a complex to work on.
The battery carries a certain amount of charged atom in a particular direction, conserves energy and uses a fluid called electrolyte. Lithium ion is positive, which is called cation. Fluoride ion negative, on the other hand, is called anion.
The main author of the study, Victoria Davies, found out an effective fluid for fluoride. Its name is BIS (2,220 trifluorethyl) Ether or BTFE. Successful fluoride batteries were found using this fluid.
Simon Jones, another author of the study, said that it is possible to get similar functionality from the battery using anion like Katine. In this case, the voltage is to be kept in mind. Their study is used to describe the benefits of using anion in the battery, because it can work on more voltages.
Researchers used some simulations to check the effectiveness and stability of this battery. Although the study is new, it is expected that these batteries will start using everywhere
